Urban Trauma Part 2: Drugs to Numb the Pain

Urban Trauma: The Series- explores the issues and the impact of generational urban trauma that many clients face today. This series of training will provide clinical strategies and interventions to help professionals and survivors cope with exposure to such trauma.


Join us as we explore and examine how exposure to urban trauma perpetuates substance abuse and dependency. This training will highlight critical elements required for collaborative care and long-term mental wellness.

Participants will be able to:

1. Describe how common prescribed and illegal substances impact the mental and physical health of communities saturated with urban trauma.

  1. List at least 5 core issues for teens and adults coping with addictions and mental health issues.
  2. Identify effective clinical approaches that assess and treat individuals experiencing substance use disorders and mental illness.

 

Trainers:

Dr. Kimberly Thomas, LCPC, CADC, CPAIP, CAM-S II, ACS, is the owner of Healthy Soul Talk LLC. She has over 12 years of clinical experience working in the mental health and addictions field. In addition, Dr. Thomas has been training professionals in various academic and in-service platforms for over eight years. Her behavioral health firm provides multilayered behavioral health services throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

Dr. Charles C. Brown earned his PhD in Community Psychology from National Louis University in Chicago. He is currently a Professor of Psychology campuses within the City Colleges of Chicago network. Dr. Brown is also the creator the R.E.A.C.T. Approach, which is a scientifically proven method to resolve conflicts within any relationship. He serves as the pastor of New Heaven Christian Church and is also the Co-Chair of the 37th Ward Pastors and Ministers Alliance.

 

These clinicians have delivered critical mental health education to the faith-based community over the past months with an intentional goal of shattering the stigma of mental health illness in the church.
